Current Openings
There are two PhD openings currently available in the group in the general area of materials for quantum technology. These do not have funding attached to them; funding can either come from applying to scholarships, or through self-funding. Full details can be found here.
There is also a PhD opening available in the group, co-supervised with Dr Ahsan Nazir in the Department of Physics, involving simulation of spin dynamics and the coupling of spin defects to their environment, with relevance to quantum technology applications. This PhD is part of the University of Manchester Bicentenary scheme, so has potential funding associated with it. Full details can be found here.
PhDs
We are always very keen to hear from students interested in joining the group – a range of potential PhD projects can be found on our Research pages. If you’re interested in pursuing a PhD with us at Manchester, get in contact!
There are multiple possible ways to fund your PhD available at the University of Manchester. Scholarships schemes will fund you for 3.5 years (the usual length of time for a PhD), including:
- Dean’s Doctoral Scholarships
- President’s Doctoral Scholarships
- Postgraduate Research Teaching Associate (PGTRA) Scholarships
- School of Natural Sciences Diversity Scholarships
- Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarships
The Department of Materials also awards several PhD studentships each year, which provide 3.5 years of funding. These are awarded across the whole Department, so there is no guarantee of one being available in our group each year.
There are many other smaller funding opportunities available as well, such as Funds for Women Graduates.
Occasionally, PhD studentships funded by industry or other sources will be available, working on an area of interest to the funder. When these become available, they will be advertised here and more widely, including on the Psi-k mailing list.
Applications from self-funded students are always welcome as well – please take a look at the PhD projects on offer, and contact Joe if you have any questions.
A note on ‘home’ students: many funding bodies will only pay ‘home’ tuition fees for PhDs, which means that only students that are eligible to pay the ‘home’ fees are eligible for these sources of funding. This is regulated by the UK Government, but typically means that you must be resident and ‘settled’ in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of your course, and must have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years before that date. There are of course exceptions, so please check your eligibility carefully.
Postdoctoral Research
We are always very keen to hear from postdocs interested in joining the group. Whenever there is a funded position available, it will be advertised here and more widely, including on the Psi-k mailing list.
If you have your own funding, or are interested in applying for some to work in our group, we would be delighted to hear from you! There are a range of possible routes to obtain funding from the University of Manchester and other sources, including (but not limited to):
